“As Christ breaks bread and bids us share,

Each proud division ends.

The love that made us makes us one,

And strangers now are friends,

And strangers now are friends.”

--from “I Come with Joy,”

@ UUMC – THIS SUNDAY – AUGUST 5

CONTEMPORARY ISSUES CLASS

This will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Chappell Room. Topic: A congregation in Crystal Springs, Miss., made the news because of what appears to be an unkindness rooted in racial prejudice -- denying a couple who'd been part of the congregation the right to be married in the church because they are black. We’ll discuss what makes a group of people a church and how it's possible for a congregation to no longer be a church.

WORSHIP

10:30 a.m. Preacher: Rev. French. Communion will be celebrated. Special music by Emma, Buff and Rob Lingo.  Item of the month for our Food Pantry: spaghetti sauce. Fellowship in Narthex after worship.

Church Picnic: Sunday, Aug. 19, at 3 p.m. the annual church picnic will begin at Pratt’s Falls County Park at the Falls Shelter. Bring a dish to pass, something to grill and sports equipment (volleyball, Frisbee, softball, etc.) Dishes, plastic ware, iced tea, lemonade and chips are provided. Fires will be going by 4 p.m. to start grilling. Call Ted Finlayson-Schueler with any questions. Here’s a link to the park site: PRATT’S

Cookies Needed:  Sunday, Aug. 26, from 4 to 7 p.m., University Church will help host a welcome picnic for the new residents of Copper Beech Commons (the new apartment complex right next door to the church). We expect to meet 150-200 students that afternoon, welcoming them to the neighborhood. We have agreed to provide dessert for the picnic, which translates into 50 dozen homemade cookies! You can sign up on Sunday mornings in August to provide 2-3 dozen (or more!) homemade cookies. You can also register your cookie “pledge” by calling the church office, 475-7277. All cookies need to be brought to the church Friday morning, Aug. 24. Questions?  Please contact the church office.

Newspapers for Breakfasts: A Sunday-morning routine for many people is reading the newspaper over breakfast. Our guests at the church breakfast on second and fourth Sundays are no different. They appreciate reading The Post-Standard while the breakfast is being cooked. The newspaper sections get divided up and disappear quickly. If you’d be willing to buy one or two newspapers and bring them to the church around 8:30 a.m. on one of these Sundays, please contact Barbara Fought, 446 7656 or bcfought@syr.edu .

Syracuse Westside Urban Mission is requesting donations of food for its summer program, "Terrific Ts," which meets every Tuesday and Thursday all summer from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Aug. 30. Lunch is served to about 40 children, youth and adults each day they meet. Donations needed include: lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, baby carrots, ranch salad dressing, bread and rolls, apples and bananas, popsicles, hot dogs, hamburgers, buns, peanut butter, jelly, cheese, drink mixes, fruit rollups and individually wrapped snacks, cookies and crackers. For information, contact SWUM Church and Community Worker Olga Gonzalez at 315-475-8996.

Juice Cans: The Altar Guild needs large juice cans for altar flower deliveries. Please bring any you have to the church instead of putting them in the blue bin!

“Sounds of the Spirit” Campaign: Because of contributions received, the first step of the upgrading of our sound system in the sanctuary has been made. Please consider making a contribution to the UUMC “Sounds of the Spirit” capital campaign so further improvements can be made. Checks should be made out to University UMC with a notation of “SOS.”
